Ned Schwing mentioned in his reference reserve over the Product 1890 & 1906 that Winchester started proof marking them in 1908… I don't know if that is definitely accurate, but will believe that it's. The “WP” proof mark was utilized following the barrel and receiver were being mated, assembled and finished.
